But if it was just that, it wouldn’t stay with me like it does, wouldn’t resonate while I walked down the stairs after putting Ruth to bed, still thinking about the book. I loved Extra Yarn from my first reading, but I didn’t know why. For her the box is always full, and she continues knitting, giving, and decorating the world. This being a children’s book, naturally the box floats across the sea and back to Annabelle, who can of course be happy again. He hurls it back into the sea, cursing Annabelle, “You will never be happy again!” Opening the box of yarn from inside his castle, the archduke is shocked to find it empty. When Annabelle refuses, he sends a party of thieves to steal it. Eventually she’ll run out of yarn, right?Īnnabelle and this miracle box of yarn draw the attention of an archduke from across the sea, who offers her millions of dollars to sell it. Knitting sweaters and scarves for trees and trucks. She knits for her classmates and her disbelieving teacher and her community, gradually filling the drab world with color. Eventually, she’ll run out of yarn, right?īut she doesn’t. And she keeps knitting, for her nosy neighbor Nate and his dog. Naturally, she begins knitting, making sweaters for herself and her dog Mars. It’s the story of a young girl named Annabelle who on one winter morning comes upon a box of yarn of every color. ![]()
